Smoothie King was founded in New Orleans in 1973. Steve Kuhnau and his soon-to-be-wife Cindy were the founder.
In the 1960s Steve Kuhnau worked at Hoppers Drive In as a soda jerk selling malts, shakes and other products. Kuhnau suffered as a teen with severe allergies and hypoglycemia and he was unable to consume many of the products he served.
At home he began experimenting with blending fruit, nutrients, vitamins, minerals and proteins. Once he began eating fresh foods an cutting fat out of his diet, Kuhnau started feeling better. He discovered that his concoctions elevated his blood sugar level while simultaneously suppressing his appended.
He began selling the beverages he had made and used the name ‘smoothies’ to identify them. His health food store was a success, particularly the smoothies. Their first Smoothies King was on Baronne Street in the central business district.
He concentrated on making smoothies and he began to franchise his operation in 1989. Each Smoothie King store sells smoothies and a variety of vitamins, minerals, low-fat snacks and nutritional supplements.
