History of Royal Crown Cola

Royal Crown Cola is created in Columbus. Their story starts back in 1905 when Columbus , Georgia pharmacist Claud A. Hatcher began bottling Chero-cola.

The company added Nehi fruit flavors in 1924 and reformulated its cola in 1934 under the name Royal Crown.

The Nehi Corporation of Columbus a major softdrinks manufacturer in the South, in 1934 introduced into the ongoing competition a new beverage, Royal Crown Cola.

Royal Crown Cola introduced the first diet cola sweetened with cyclamates and saccharin– Diet Rite Cola in 1958.

It caught the competition by surprise. It was 3 years before Coca-Cola responded with Tab, and Pepsi-Cola with Diet Pepsi.

Royal Crown Cola dominated the fast growing market for diet soft drinks though the mid 1960s. Although it was only one twentieth the size of Coca-Cola, it owned a 50 percent share of the fast growing diet soft drink market.
